“Where the hell are you?” Cecelia Beaucharnel demanded when she finally reached Bolo on his cell phone. She was sitting in the upstairs office, behind the false wall, the room in which she kept documents that could not be sufficiently encrypted. A room that could be locked and sealed in case of a raid. A room even Bolo could not access. “Galloway was here. He was waiting for the twins. How could you possibly have fucked this up?” There was a long silence. “Bolo?”

“I’m sorry,” Bolo said. “I love you like a sister.”

There were no windows in the office. Clearly. They were not careless enough to be caught by a junior police officer counting windows and rooms. Even though the space was large and well-appointed with original Stickly furniture, it felt claustrophobic.

“I really do,” he whined.

Cecelia wished she could reach through the phone lines and strangle him. She had always thought it advantageous to have one family member dumb enough to take the risks she and her husband, Cyrus Wilson, would not take. To fly to the Ukraine to collect a shipment of girls left stranded when two of their local bottoms got in a fight and shot each other. To negotiate terms with military agents in the Congo. To beat and to fuck when necessary. To kill. But there were disadvantages also, and his stupidity was one of them. “You were supposed to be there,” she said.

“I love you, but I love Ashley Payten too,” Bolo said, “and we want to start a life together.”

“Ashley Payten? You left me on the gallows for Ashley Payten? Because I wouldn’t let you fuck the Girl Scout?”

“She’s not a Girl Scout, and I want to marry her.” Bolo’s voice trembled. He was forty, but he acted like a child.

“Well you can’t.”

“Have you heard of Bi Jiao Hui?” Bolo asked.

“What?”

“Samuel Buchanan?” he went on. “He’s from Texas, but he changed his name when he moved to China and set up some of the first electronics factories, right after China earned most favorable trade status. He’s worth billions.”

“What is this about, Bolo?” She tried to tame the rage in her voice.

“He found out about the twins. I don’t know how.”

“What the fuck!”

“He offered me three million.”

Cecelia slapped her hand on the table in front of her sending a Monte Blanc pen skittering across the desk. “That’s nothing! We have a contract with Galloway. We honor that contract.”

“That’s your contract,” Bolo said. “My contract is with Bi Jiao Hui.”
